The Rakuten Books Coupon & Point Playbook: Buying Books at the Lowest Effective Price
On top of free shipping, stack coupons, shopping marathons and SPU — how low does the effective price go? We bought to find the cheapest way and wrote it all down.
Books & MediaRakuten Books already ships free, but the real savings are the effective price after stacking coupon discount + point return + shopping-marathon multiplier. Even with books sold at list price, stacking points changes the effective price a lot.
We bought on Rakuten Books and logged everything from claiming coupons to the point grant. This is the cheapest-way playbook and the failure patterns to avoid; the platform itself is in our main Rakuten Books note.
Check coupons, then buy
Coupons free to claim; free shipping on all

The ground rules in 30 seconds
- Everything already ships free (from one item) — the baseline strength
- Claim coupons before buying and apply them at checkout (claim-first)
- Points cover the post-coupon balance (they combine)
- Buying around other shops during a marathon raises the multiplier
- SPU and entry-based campaigns need entry before buying
Know the coupon types
Rakuten Books distributes coupons by genre and target item. The ones we used (distribution varies by season):
- Always check target items, conditions, cap and expiry at claim time
- Claiming alone doesn't discount — confirm it's applied at checkout
| Coupon | What it does | Best used for |
|---|---|---|
| Genre coupon | Discount on comics/books/CDs etc. | Check genre and cap |
| Spend-threshold coupon | Discount over a set amount | Pays off on bulk buys |
| Sale-linked coupon | Sometimes stacks with Super SALE | Claim during sales |
| Pre-order/new-release campaign | Point multiplier on pre-orders/new titles | Enter, then pre-order |
Maximizing points: shopping marathon × SPU
Since book discounts are small, point return drives the effective price. Rakuten Books benefits from Ichiba-family programs.
- Shopping marathon: buying around other shops raises the multiplier (Books counts as one shop)
- SPU: using Rakuten Books, plus Rakuten Card/Mobile, lifts the multiplier
- Overlap with Rakuten-wide point-up days (5-and-0) for more
- Pay with a Rakuten Card for card points too (double dip)
- Earned points are often limited-time — spend before they expire
The cheapest way: our procedure
The 'don't overpay' procedure we settled on — use free shipping, but list and stack.
- 1. Bank wanted books/media in a wishlist
- 2. Wait for a shopping marathon or sale (watch Rakuten's announcements)
- 3. Claim eligible coupons and enter the campaign
- 4. Bulk-buy during the marathon while buying around other shops; apply points
- 5. Pay with a Rakuten Card to double-dip points
Classic failure patterns
- Bought without claiming → no retroactive fix; claim → buy in order
- Forgot to enter → excluded from the campaign multiplier; enter before buying
- Item not eligible → check the coupon's genre/target at claim time
- Let limited-time points expire → spend early via Rakuten Pay etc.
- Rushed a single purchase → a marathon often adds a multiplier if you wait
Pros (what we liked)
- Layer coupons and points on top of free shipping
- Shopping marathon and SPU lift the effective return sharply
- Coupons combine with point redemption
- Rakuten Card double-dips points
- Earned points spend on non-book Rakuten services
Cons (what to watch)
- Books are list-priced, so discounts are small
- Miss claim-first/entry and you lose the multiplier
- Sales and coupons run irregularly — timing takes attention
- Earned points are limited-time — mind the expiry

Frequently asked questions
Where do I get Rakuten Books coupons?
From Rakuten Books' coupon/sale feature pages. Claim the coupon, then apply it during checkout. It's claim-first, so claim before buying.
Can I combine coupons and points?
Yes. Points cover the post-coupon balance, so coupon + points gives the lowest effective price — and a Rakuten Card double-dips points on top.
Do books get cheaper during a shopping marathon?
Books are list-priced so discounts are small, but marathons raise the point multiplier, so bulk-buying lifts the effective return. With free shipping on everything, even small orders are worthwhile.
Are books included in Rakuten Super SALE?
Books and media are sometimes covered by Super SALE or sale-linked coupons. Coverage and rates change each event, so check the sale announcement and coupon pages before buying.
Do earned points expire?
Campaign points are often limited-time with an expiry. Check the deadline in Rakuten PointClub and spend early on your next book or via Rakuten Pay.
