The ground rules in 30 seconds
- Everything already ships free (from one item) — the baseline strength
- Claim coupons before buying and apply them at checkout (claim-first)
- Points cover the post-coupon balance (they combine)
- Buying around other shops during a marathon raises the multiplier
- SPU and entry-based campaigns need entry before buying
Know the coupon types
Rakuten Books distributes coupons by genre and target item. The ones we used (distribution varies by season):
- Always check target items, conditions, cap and expiry at claim time
- Claiming alone doesn't discount — confirm it's applied at checkout

Maximizing points: shopping marathon × SPU
Since book discounts are small, point return drives the effective price. Rakuten Books benefits from Ichiba-family programs.
- Shopping marathon: buying around other shops raises the multiplier (Books counts as one shop)
- SPU: using Rakuten Books, plus Rakuten Card/Mobile, lifts the multiplier
- Overlap with Rakuten-wide point-up days (5-and-0) for more
- Pay with a Rakuten Card for card points too (double dip)
- Earned points are often limited-time — spend before they expire
The cheapest way: our procedure
The 'don't overpay' procedure we settled on — use free shipping, but list and stack.
- 1. Bank wanted books/media in a wishlist
- 2. Wait for a shopping marathon or sale (watch Rakuten's announcements)
- 3. Claim eligible coupons and enter the campaign
- 4. Bulk-buy during the marathon while buying around other shops; apply points
- 5. Pay with a Rakuten Card to double-dip points
Classic failure patterns
- Bought without claiming → no retroactive fix; claim → buy in order
- Forgot to enter → excluded from the campaign multiplier; enter before buying
- Item not eligible → check the coupon's genre/target at claim time
- Let limited-time points expire → spend early via Rakuten Pay etc.
- Rushed a single purchase → a marathon often adds a multiplier if you wait
