Can You Book a Hotel Entirely with Rakuten Points? We Tried | The Best Sink for Expiring Points
Does 'travel on points' actually work? We paid for a real stay entirely in points and logged the payment flow, how limited-time points behave, and when rewards land.

TravelRakuten points spend at 1 point = ¥1 on Rakuten Travel bookings — including the limited-time points everyone forgets to use. Burning them on one hotel night beats dribbling them away at convenience stores.
We booked a real stay paid 100% in points and recorded everything from the payment screen to the invoice to when new points arrived. The Rakuten Mobile / Rakuten Card synergy (SPU) is covered here too.

Point payment in 30 seconds
- Points offset the bill at 1pt = ¥1 — partial or full, your choice
- Limited-time points qualify, and burn before regular points
- The point-paid share earns no new points (only the settled amount does)
- Online card-payment plans only — pay-at-hotel plans can't take points on-site
- You type the exact number of points to use at the payment step
We booked a stay entirely on points: the log
The flow needs no special setup — a point-entry field simply appears mid-checkout.
- 1. Pick the hotel and choose an online card-payment plan
- 2. At the payment step, choose 'use points'
- 3. Enter the full amount — the balance due drops to ¥0
- 4. Confirm limited-time points are deducted first
- 5. Book. Invoice: ¥0, expiring points rescued
Why this is the best sink for limited-time points
Most campaign points are limited-time and quietly expire. We used to trickle them out at convenience stores; consolidating them into hotel stays fixed the burn rate overnight.
- Post-Super-SALE point hauls expire fast — route them into a stay
- Max out the point slider and the trip never touches your wallet
| Sink | Typical burn per use | Satisfaction (subjective) |
|---|---|---|
| Convenience store / Rakuten Pay | A few hundred yen | Low (barely felt) |
| Rakuten Ichiba shopping | A few thousand yen | Medium (invites impulse buys) |
| Rakuten Travel stay | ¥5,000–20,000 | High (a whole free night) |
SPU: Mobile and Card users travel cheaper
The more Rakuten services you use, the higher your Ichiba point multiplier (SPU) — and those points fund travel. That's the loop: stay on points, earn them back. Multipliers and terms change often; always check the official SPU page.
- Rakuten Mobile: the heavyweight SPU booster — your phone bill becomes point fuel (see our Rakuten Mobile note)
- Rakuten Card: pay the hotel by card and the settled share earns separately (see our Rakuten Card note)
- Rakuten Travel usage itself can qualify for SPU (check current terms)
- Our example: Mobile + Card + Ichiba points covered one onsen trip a year in full (template figures)
When do points arrive? Our timing log
Rewards land after the stay, not at booking. In our log, regular points arrived a while after checkout. Exact timing varies by plan and season — 'around the month after your stay' is the safe assumption.
- Only the settled amount earns; the point-paid share doesn't
- Cancelled bookings earn nothing
- Campaign bonuses (5-and-0 uplifts etc.) usually arrive separately, later
- Track everything in Rakuten PointClub's history
Ưu điểm (điểm chúng tôi thích)
- Full 1pt = ¥1 value with no depreciation
- The best bulk sink for limited-time points
- Zero-cash trips are genuinely possible
- Chains with SPU and 5-and-0 days into a self-funding loop
- Point usage adjustable to the exact yen
Nhược điểm (điểm cần lưu ý)
- Point-paid amounts earn nothing back
- Pay-at-hotel plans excluded from site-side point payment
- Rewards arrive post-stay, not instantly
- SPU terms shift often enough to need re-checking

Câu hỏi thường gặp
Can I book a hotel entirely with points?
Yes. On an online card-payment plan, enter the full amount at checkout and the balance drops to ¥0. We did exactly this for a real stay.
Do limited-time points work?
Yes — and they're consumed before regular points, which makes hotel stays the ideal rescue for soon-to-expire balances.
Does the point-paid portion earn new points?
No. Only amounts settled by cash or card earn points. A fully point-paid stay generates essentially no new points.
When are points granted?
After the stay. Ours arrived a while after checkout — plan on 'around the following month' and confirm in Rakuten PointClub's history, since timing varies.
Can I use points on pay-at-hotel plans?
Site-side point payment requires an online card-payment plan. Choose one of those if you intend to pay with points — pay-at-hotel plans won't take them on the site.
