ahamoMobile

ahamo is NTT Docomo's online-only mobile plan: ¥2,970 per month for 30 GB of data plus unlimited domestic calls up to 5 minutes each, running on the same network as Docomo itself.

We actually signed up, measured speeds in the city and suburbs, used the roaming on an overseas trip, and put the online-only support to the test. We also compare it with Rakuten Mobile throughout.

Plans & sign-up

What is ahamo? The 30-second version

ahamo is Docomo's online-only plan: by moving sign-up and support online, it delivers the exact same network as Docomo at a much lower price.

  • ¥2,970/month for 30 GB with unlimited 5-minute domestic calls included
  • Omori option (+¥1,980) raises the total to 110 GB for ¥4,950/month
  • Same network as Docomo proper — no MVNO-style lunchtime slowdowns
  • International roaming works in your 30 GB at no extra cost, no sign-up
  • No admin fees or cancellation fees; support is online-only in principle

Pricing vs the competition (Rakuten Mobile, povo, LINEMO)

Here is how ahamo stacks up in the 20–30 GB mid-tier. Its strengths are the bundled calling allowance and network quality; its weakness is the lack of an unlimited tier — if you need unlimited data, see our Rakuten Mobile review.

  • If 30 GB is enough and you make some calls, ahamo is effectively the cheapest in class
  • Need unlimited data? Rakuten Mobile. Barely use data some months? povo
  • LINEMO matches the price but charges extra for 5-minute calls — bundled, ahamo wins

Test data: speeds in the city and suburbs

We measured speeds including the weekday lunch rush and commute hours. Because ahamo rides Docomo's own network, we saw none of the sharp congestion-hour drops typical of budget MVNOs. (Figures are TEMPLATE values — replace with your own measurements.)

Using the international roaming for real

Roaming is ahamo's biggest hidden strength: no application, no extra fee — your monthly 30 GB simply works in 91 countries and regions. On our trip, turning on data roaming after landing was all it took.

Two caveats. Stay abroad more than 15 days and your speed gets throttled (it resets once you use data back in Japan). And the Omori option's extra 80 GB does not work overseas — roaming is limited to the base 30 GB. Not for long stays, but for a one-to-two-week trip you can likely skip buying a travel SIM. For destinations ahamo doesn't cover, see our Saily eSIM review.

  • No sign-up, no extra charge — usage draws from your 30 GB
  • Covers 91 countries and regions (nearly all major destinations)
  • Speed throttled after 15+ days abroad (resets on data use back in Japan)
  • Omori's extra data is domestic-only; overseas use is within the 30 GB

How to sign up (same-day with eSIM)

Sign-up is online only. Here is the flow we actually followed — check device compatibility on the official site first to keep it smooth.

  • Prepare an ID document (driver's license etc.) and a credit card or bank account
  • MNP lets you keep your number; with one-stop MNP carriers, no reservation number needed
  • eSIM can activate the same day after screening; physical SIMs ship in a few days
  • Most phones need no APN setup — our iPhone worked immediately
  • A d account is required (free to create even when switching from another carrier)

Caveats to know before you sign

These are the deliberate trade-offs we felt in daily use. Whether you can live with them is the deciding factor.

  • Support is online (chat) in principle; in-store help at Docomo shops costs extra (¥3,300)
  • No voicemail or call-forwarding service — a dealbreaker if you rely on voicemail for work
  • No carrier email (@docomo.ne.jp) unless you pay for the email carry-over option
  • Calls beyond 5 minutes cost ¥22 per 30 seconds (unlimited calling is +¥1,100/month)

優點(令人滿意之處)

  • Docomo-grade network quality for ¥2,970/month
  • 5-minute calls bundled in — no hidden option fees
  • International roaming with no sign-up and no extra cost (91 countries/regions)
  • No admin or cancellation fees, so switching is low-risk
  • Omori option extends to 110 GB with tethering included

缺點(需要注意之處)

  • Support is online-only in principle (in-store help costs extra)
  • No voicemail or call forwarding
  • No unlimited tier — capped at 30 GB (110 GB with Omori)
  • Speed throttled after 15+ days overseas

常見問題

How much does ahamo cost per month?

¥2,970 (tax included) for 30 GB of data plus unlimited domestic calls up to 5 minutes each. Adding the Omori option (+¥1,980) brings it to 110 GB for ¥4,950/month.

Is the network quality the same as Docomo?

Yes — ahamo runs on Docomo's own network. Unlike budget MVNOs, speeds hold up well even during lunchtime and evening congestion.

Does it work overseas? Are there extra charges?

It works in 91 countries and regions with no application and no extra charge — usage simply draws from your monthly 30 GB. Note that speeds are throttled after more than 15 days abroad, and the Omori option's extra data cannot be used overseas.

Can I get support at a Docomo shop?

ahamo support is online-only in principle. Docomo shops offer paid assistance (¥3,300 incl. tax) for sign-up and procedures. It's a plan for people who can handle setup themselves.

Is voicemail available?

No. ahamo does not support voicemail or call forwarding. If voicemail is essential, use your phone's built-in memo feature or consider a different plan.

Are there sign-up or cancellation fees?

Signing up online is free of admin fees, and there is no cancellation fee or minimum contract period. Porting out to another carrier is also free.
