MobileRakuten Mobile's Saikyō Plan is tiered by usage: ¥1,078 up to 3 GB, ¥2,178 up to 20 GB, and ¥3,278 no matter how much you use (all tax included) — less than half what the big three carriers charge. The question is whether it actually connects.
We signed up under our own name and used it as our main line for six months, running weekly speed tests at four fixed spots (home, station, subway, office building) while logging Rakuten Link call quality and every monthly bill in the testing notebook.

What is Rakuten Mobile? The 30-second version
Rakuten Mobile is the mobile carrier run by the Rakuten Group. There is exactly one plan — the Saikyō Plan — and your monthly fee is set automatically by how much data you use. No option menus to decode.
- ¥1,078/mo (to 3 GB), ¥2,178 (to 20 GB), ¥3,278 (unlimited) — all tax included
- No sign-up fee, no cancellation fee, no minimum term (¥0)
- Unlimited tethering at no extra charge
- Free domestic calls via the Rakuten Link app
- Subscribing raises your Rakuten Ichiba point multiplier (SPU) — up to +4x as of this article's update
Pricing vs the competition (ahamo, povo, LINEMO)
For anyone using 20 GB+ a month, the real competitors are the big carriers' online-only plans. Lined up as of this article's update, Rakuten's advantage in the unlimited tier is clear.
- Over 20 GB/month: Rakuten's ¥3,278 unlimited is about the cheapest available
- Under 3 GB/month: LINEMO or povo can be cheaper in some months
- Plans change — always confirm current pricing on each official site before signing up
| Plan | Monthly (tax incl.) | Data | Domestic calls |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rakuten Mobile Saikyō Plan | ¥1,078–3,278 | Unlimited (tiered) | Free via Rakuten Link |
| ahamo | ¥2,970 | 30 GB | 5-min calls included |
| povo2.0 | ¥0 base + toppings | e.g. 20 GB/30 days ¥2,700 | 5-min calls ¥550/mo |
| LINEMO Best Plan | ¥990–2,090 | 3–10 GB (tiered) | Optional |
Six months of measurements: speed and coverage
We ran weekly speed tests at four fixed spots — home, the nearest station, the subway, and an office building. Our everyday-area average was 48 Mbps down: plenty for streaming, video calls, and tethering. (Template figures — replace with your own measurements.)
Since the platinum-band (700 MHz) rollout, indoor reception has noticeably improved. But parts of large buildings and the subway still dropped to 8 Mbps at worst, so 'equal to the big carriers everywhere' would be an overstatement. Full measurements are in the testing records below.
Is Rakuten Link call quality good enough for work?
Rakuten Link is the subscriber-only calling app that makes domestic calls free. Across six months of logged calls, quality and latency were fine outdoors and at home.
Deep inside buildings with weak signal, we logged several audio dropouts. If important work calls are your daily reality, keep the standard dialer (¥22/30 s) as a fallback — or stay with a major carrier if call quality is non-negotiable.
How to sign up (same-day with eSIM)
When we signed up ourselves, eSIM activation took about one hour from application to live service. The steps:
- 1. Prepare ID (driver's license or My Number card)
- 2. Choose the Saikyō Plan on the official site (MNP one-stop may skip the reservation number when porting)
- 3. Pick your SIM: eSIM activates as soon as same-day; physical SIM ships in 2–3 days
- 4. Install Rakuten Link after activation to enable free calls
အားသာချက်များ (ကြိုက်သည့်အချက်)
- Unlimited data at ¥3,278/mo — under half the big carriers
- 48 Mbps average measured speed in our daily areas
- Unlimited tethering at no extra charge
- Free domestic calls via Rakuten Link
- No sign-up or cancellation fees — easy to try
အားနည်းချက်များ (သတိထားရမည့်အချက်)
- Still weak deep inside large buildings and parts of the subway
- Rakuten Link call quality fluctuates with signal
- Thinner support network than the big carriers

မေးလေ့ရှိသောမေးခွန်းများ
Is Rakuten Mobile really unlimited?
Yes. The Saikyō Plan offers unlimited high-speed data for ¥3,278/month (tax included), tethering included. Rakuten officially notes that speeds may be managed during extreme heavy use to keep service fair.
I heard it doesn't connect indoors — is that still true?
Indoor reception has been improving since the platinum-band (700 MHz) rollout. In our six-month test it was fine almost everywhere in daily life, but weak spots remain deep inside large buildings and in parts of the subway.
Are there cancellation fees or a minimum term?
No. Sign-up and cancellation fees are both ¥0 and there is no minimum contract period, so you can leave at any time for free if it doesn't suit you.
What is Rakuten Link?
A calling app exclusive to Rakuten Mobile subscribers. Domestic calls made through the app are free; regular dialer calls cost ¥22 per 30 seconds.
How much does it raise the Rakuten Ichiba point multiplier (SPU)?
As of this article's update, a Rakuten Mobile subscription raises your Rakuten Ichiba point multiplier by up to +4x. Conditions change, so check the official SPU page for current terms.
Is 5G included at no extra cost?
Yes. With a 5G-capable device inside a 5G coverage area, 5G works at no additional charge.
