Rakuten KoboeBooks

Ebooks look identically priced everywhere — until you count coupons and point returns, which swing the effective price day by day. We ran Rakuten Kobo and Kindle side by side for three months, logging the effective price of 42 books we actually wanted, weekly, on both stores.

We also compared the reading apps head-to-head on the same book — page turns, highlights, dictionary — and measured how far Rakuten ecosystem points (SPU, shopping marathons) move the needle.

What is Rakuten Kobo? The 30-second version

Rakuten Kobo is the Rakuten Group's ebook store. It carries a broad catalog centered on fiction, business books and manga; purchases earn Rakuten points, and coupons plus shopping marathons and SPU cut the effective price — its biggest edge.

  • Free app; read on iOS/Android/PC/Kobo e-readers
  • Purchases earn Rakuten points and feed SPU (Super Point Up Program)
  • Frequent coupons and strong bulk-buy point multipliers
  • One Rakuten ID unifies history and points with Rakuten Books (paper)
  • DRM means books bought on Kindle or elsewhere can't be read here directly

Why it beats Kindle on effective price (coupons × points)

List prices match Kindle, but Kobo's two-stage combo — coupon discount plus point return — lowers the effective price. In our 3-month, 42-book log, Kobo won 26 of 42 books, about 12% cheaper on average (template figures — replace with your own).

Saving on books with Rakuten points and SPU

Kobo's real edge is Rakuten-ecosystem integration — the versatility, absent from Kindle, of spending earned points on things other than books.

  • Rakuten points spend across the whole ecosystem (Ichiba, Travel, etc.)
  • Pay with a Rakuten Card and the card spend earns separately (double dip)
  • Buying around during a shopping marathon lifts the multiplier sharply
  • A great sink for limited-time points (books use small amounts easily)

Devices and how to use the app

Kobo runs on phone, tablet, PC and Kobo e-readers, with bookmarks and highlights auto-syncing. The basics we actually used:

  • Sign up: just log in with a Rakuten ID (free to create)
  • Buy: pick a book, apply coupons/points, purchase
  • Read: it auto-downloads to the app and reads offline
  • Sync: open on another device and bookmarks/highlights appear within seconds
  • New phone: log in with the same Rakuten ID to re-download owned books

Versus other ebook stores (the essentials)

Ebook stores differentiate by ecosystem and genre strength. Kobo's position against the majors (full comparison in our ebook-store comparison note):

What is Rakuten Kobo?

The Rakuten Group's ebook store, with a broad catalog of fiction, business books and manga. The app is free; purchases earn Rakuten points, and coupons plus shopping marathons and SPU cut the effective price.

Is Rakuten Kobo cheaper than Kindle?

List prices are nearly identical, but on effective price — after coupons and points — Kobo often wins. In our 3-month, 42-book log, Kobo was cheaper on 26 books by about 12% on average, especially on bulk buys during a shopping marathon.

Can I buy books with only Rakuten points?

Yes. You can apply points at checkout, including paying the full amount in points. Limited-time points work too, making it a handy sink before they expire.

Can I read offline?

Yes. Purchased books auto-download to the app and read offline, even with no connection.

Can I read Kindle books on Rakuten Kobo?

No. Ebooks are DRM-protected, so you can't read books bought on one store in another. Books bought on Kobo are read in the Kobo app.

Do I keep my books after changing phones?

Yes. Log in with the same Rakuten ID and re-download owned books to the new device; bookmarks and highlights sync too.
