eSIM vs physical SIM in 30 seconds
An eSIM writes your contract onto a chip already inside the phone. No card swapping — a QR scan or app flow brings the line up.

Before you apply: device and SIM-lock checks
Check these two things first — skip them and you'll end up stuck mid-activation.
- Confirm eSIM support on Rakuten's official compatibility page (iPhone XS/XR or later as a rule of thumb)
- Carrier-bought phone? Confirm it's SIM-unlocked (devices sold after Oct 2021 generally are)
- Have your ID document ready (driver's license, My Number card, etc.)
- Have your Rakuten ID and a credit card or bank account ready
- Secure Wi-Fi for the switchover — your old line goes dark mid-process
Applying: ~15 minutes with AI identity verification
The steps and timings from our own run (timings are our logs; screening speed varies). The key: pick 'AI simple identity verification (eKYC)'. Choosing verification-on-delivery kills same-day activation even on eSIM.
- 1. Choose new/MNP on the official site — there's only one plan, so proceed (≈2 min)
- 2. Pick 'eSIM' as the SIM type (≈1 min)
- 3. eKYC: photograph your license or My Number card, then your face (≈5 min)
- 4. For MNP, select your current carrier — one-stop carriers need no reservation number (≈3 min)
- 5. Set payment and submit (≈4 min)
Activating: under 10 minutes after approval
Once the screening-complete notice arrives, everything happens in the My Rakuten Mobile app. This took us under ten minutes.
- 1. Open My Rakuten Mobile while connected to Wi-Fi
- 2. Tap 'activate' in your application history
- 3. For MNP, the port-in runs here (old line drops, Rakuten takes over)
- 4. The eSIM profile downloads automatically
- 5. Confirm signal bars, then log into Rakuten Link to finish call setup
Three traps we actually hit
- MNP port-in has processing hours — file early in the day or the switch completes tomorrow
- Your old line goes dark mid-switch: without Wi-Fi the profile download stalls
- On iPhone, missing the 'Add cellular plan' dialog silently blocks progress
Upgrades and reissues: free and app-only

Can a Rakuten Mobile eSIM really activate the same day?
Yes. Apply with AI identity verification (eKYC) and, if screening goes smoothly, you can be live the same day. Our log: ~15 minutes to apply plus under 10 minutes to activate. Screening backlogs or late-day applications can push it to the next day.
Does issuing or reissuing an eSIM cost anything?
No. Both initial issue and reissue (upgrade, loss, etc.) are free, handled in the My Rakuten Mobile app.
How do I know if my phone supports eSIM?
Search your model on Rakuten Mobile's official compatibility page. iPhone XS/XR and later qualify, as do most recent Androids — but behavior can differ by sales channel, so always confirm officially.
Should I pick eSIM or physical SIM?
eSIM if your device supports it and you want speed. Physical SIM if your device doesn't, or you routinely move one SIM between phones. You can switch SIM types after contracting, too.
